The traditional costume of Brașov – a small part of history
We are convinced that if we would say about Romania that it is one of the richest countries in traditions and customs, we would not be wrong. It is known that only the Romanian has the feeling “dor” and only he owns the most colorful and richly ornamented traditional costume… the folk costume.
Because history must be expressed and kept alive in our minds, thus helping to preserve the feeling of belonging, various artists like writers, painters or even tailors have managed to bring the traditions into the current reality, which unfortunately is increasingly poor in values.
The folk Romanian costume differs from one area of the country to another, being a real visiting card, which presents you with the most valuable testimonies of traditions, customs and especially their history.
The oldest iconographic testimonies of the way people used to dress, date from the Neolithic and are represented by some ceramic figurines, whose ornaments are similar to those on the decoration of the folk costume. About 130 years ago, the great historian and man of culture Alexandru Odobescu noticed the similarity between the Romanian folk costume and the one of the Dacians, represented on the famous Trajan’s Column. Passionate of history and beauty, the same great Romanian cultural value, Al. Odobescu, exhibited in Paris in 1867, in an exhibition, objects of folk art, which were admired by participants from all over the world.
Romania is a proud country, but no Romanian is prouder than the Transylvanian. Being like a fairy land, wanted by explorers throughout history, Transylvania has one of the richest treasures of traditions and customs and a special folk costume.
Brasov – one of the jewels of Transylvania, proudly wears its traditional costume having a series of ornaments that bring an air of novelty and originality. Thus, the folk costume specific to Brașov uniquely combines tradition with novelty, this is due to the fact that throughout history, this area is considered one of the richest and most developed from a socio-economic point of view.
For the girls, the traditional shirt, named “ie” is sewed with red or black thread, and the embroidery has various geometric shapes. The skirts are long, red with black stripes and were made on a special sewing machine. The vest is black, being decorated with red embroidery. Thus, the folk costume from Bârsa region is considered one of the most elegant and sober, compared to those from other areas of the country.
