The etymology of the word “hotel”

width=We have always had that desire for knowledge. Knowledge of things, people or places. From it, in fact, our appetite for travel erupted, and the appetite to always know other and other corners of the world becomes more and more accentuated, once you have contracted this “disease”. Since ancient times, people have traveled, merchants and pilgrims being the first social categories that began to travel more and more.

Few of us know that when simple people did not come out of their villages for decades or maybe even never, merchants traveled the world far and wide. In fact, there were two parallel worlds, the peasants locked in their own worlds and the pilgrims who traveled to the most distant places, which an ordinary person never had the power to even dream about. From the need to be accommodated, to stop along the way, the first inns appeared. Initially created for these limited categories, the inns started to become a necessity.

According to legends, the first inns appeared around 1200 in China, and later in Europe. The successors of these inns are, obviously, the hotels. According to DEX, the hotel is a building set up for the short-term rental of furnished rooms, especially to travelers.

If at the beginning, in Romania, the hotels were modestly furnished and equipped, after the revolution of ’89, this hotel industry exploded in our country as well. Of the former hotels, however, the current owners have kept only the old architecture, which is still attractive. The place for carriages has been replaced by modern garages with heating, inns with receptionists, and the rooms have nothing of the minimalist and sober landscape of yesteryear. What remained behind are the names of the most important personalities who crossed their threshold.

The oldest five-star hotel in Romania is the Intercontinental Bucharest, being one of the symbols of the capital. It is known that it is the tallest hotel in Bucharest and it cost 6 million dollars 40 years ago when it was built. One of the legends says that Cyrus Eaton Junior, the head of the “Cyrus Eaton Group” arrived in Bucharest 40 years ago and had to sleep in the hallways of a hotel because there were no more places to stay. This is how the story of the Intercontinental Hotel began, or at least that’s what the legends say.
width=In recent years, heads of state, ambassadors, politicians, athletes and artists from all over the world have stayed in the legendary hotel. Lenny Kravitz, Anatoli Karpov, Ariel Sharon, Luciano Pavarotti, Jose Carreras and violinist Nigel Kennedy are just a few examples. And Hotel Alpin is proud of its best services, both in terms of accommodation and entertaining, relaxation and food at select restaurants. Launched in 1976 in Poiana Brașov, Hotel Alpin would become one of the most exclusive hotels in Romania.
