New archaeological discoveries at the Black Church

width=Nicolae Iorga said: “A nation that does not know its history is like a child that does not know its parents”.

Considering this quote, as well as the glorious history of our country that has been told over time in golden words in prose and verse, we must offer, from time to time, food for the mind by seeking and finding correct and documented information about the history of our country.

This year, Romanian archaeologists made an extraordinary discovery that seems to have become an important piece in the puzzle of our country’s history. The Black Church in Brașov, in addition to being an internationally known tourist attraction, is also an important historical landmark that raises unanswered questions even for historians.

width=The Black Church writes its history from around the year 1380 when it was built as a Catholic religious place called the Church of St. Mary. In 1683, a fire partially destroyed the beautiful church, and the people of that time, impressed by this disaster, changed its name to the Black Church. Since then, this witness of written and unwritten history has welcomed visitors with open arms, reconciled sinful hearts and delighted curious minds.

In 1203, according to the writers of chronicles, it would be the year in which “the construction of Brașov began”. According to some archaeological discoveries this year, 1400 graves, ornaments and pieces of dishes were discovered in the courtyard of the Black Church in Brașov.

width=The impressive discovery attests to the fact that, before the foundation of the city of Brașov, a flourishing, socially evolved civilization lived in the same place, due to the fact that ruins built with mortals were discovered.

In addition to the 1400 graves, two gravestones were discovered which, according to archaeologists, would be from the 18th century, pits for supplies that would have been built in the 12th century, as well as a well-preserved horse skeleton.

width=After being restored, the discovered objects will be exhibited at the Museum of History in Brașov, waiting to be examined by the curious eyes of tourists from all over the world.

Located only 13 km from Brașov, Hotel Alpin invites you to enjoy the beauties offered by this city and at the same time to satisfy your thirst for knowledge with the recently discovered history lesson about the 1400 graves in the courtyard of the Black Church.

width=The great historian and man of culture Nicolae Iorga said: “Knowing history, heroes, tradition, we become more sociable, more altruistic, more loving of people and life”. Thus, I suggest you to learn history not only from books but also from the silent witnesses of time.
