Easter holidays in an oasis of relaxation
Tomorrow, the entire Catholic community celebrates one of the most important holidays: Easter. Celebrated this year 5 weeks before the Orthodox Easter, the Catholic Easter comes to remember once again Jesus crucified on the cross. The importance of these holidays is a major one, in the Catholic and Orthodox Church alike.
Precisely for this reason, we will give a few lines to expose in more detail the aspects of this annual celebration. It is known that although the two churches are almost identical in terms of rituals and creeds, they follow different calendars in establishing the dates of the most important holidays throughout the year.
The change came with the Great Schism, an event that divided Christianity into two large parts: Catholic and Orthodox. Although several causes of this unfortunate event are mentioned, the main one was the dispute over the authority, the others being too small to be able to say that they produced a rupture of such caliber.
Since then, the Roman Catholic Church uses the Gregorian calendar to determine the dates on which certain events are celebrated, while the Orthodox Church continues to use the Julian calendar.
Hence the difference from 1 week to 5 weeks between Catholic Easter and Orthodox Easter. Only in 2014, the celebration of Easter will be the same for both Churches. But now we are talking about the Catholic Easter and we must also mention some of the most important traditions and customs.
Before Easter, Catholics fast for 5 weeks. Unlike the Orthodox fast, the Catholic fast is less severe, only requiring abstinence from meat dishes.
Another tradition includes the Pope. He celebrates the resurrection meal in front of thousands of believers, in St. Peter’s square in the Vatican. This year Catholics have a new Pope, Pope Francisc. Francis was elected after Pope Benedict XVI was the first pope to abdicate in the last 600 years.
