The legends of spring flowers

One of the things that turns spring into the favorite season of many of us, especially for ladies, is the multitude of flowers that are specific to this period. Vividly colored and ephemerals, their fragility always makes us think of reborn life and dear beings.

Florists offer us a variety of flowers, some of them more imposing or sophisticated, but we have to admit that in spring, nothing compares to the small bouquets of snowdrops, lilies of the valley or violets. Did you know that each of these spring flowers has its own legend, full of meanings? The charm is hidden in the simplest and most beautiful things.

According to legend, a king once had two children, a boy and a girl. He loved them both so much and there was nothing more beautiful for him than to have them by his side every day, at his palace. Unfortunately, when the two children were 10 years old, a fierce disease touched most of the kingdom’s population and the king’s daughter died. Torn by pain, the prince, who loved his sister with all his heart, ran away from the castle to mourn his pain away from everyone. His tears began to turn into tender, small and white flowers, with a unique fragrance, and they received the name of lilies of the valley.

The violet is one of the symbols of spring, and you certainly have in mind the image of its vivid color, which appears in the first days of spring, sometimes even being surrounded by the last traces of snow. It symbolizes fertility and love.

There are several legends of the violet, because it was noticed not only by the local population but also by the ancient Greeks and Romans. One of the most famous legends is, without a doubt, the one according to which one of the beautiful daughters of Atlas was pursued by the rays of the god Apollo. Since his rays burned too strongly, she asked Zeus to protect her. Zeus then took the girl to a cool forest, and metamorphosed her into a fragrant violet, with velvety petals, in the shape of a heart.

 width=The Legend of Snowdrop

The legend says that the snowdrop, nowadays, the star of spring, was the most blooming flower in the garden. One day, a princess came down from the sky to choose a flower to put in her hair. Walking through the garden, the princess accidentally touched the snowdrop with the train of her dress and broke it. Full of remorse, she restored him on the spot and asked him what his greatest wish was, in order to fulfill it and remedy the poor snowdrop’s suffering. He asked the girl only one thing: to be the first flower to rise from the earth in the spring. The princess kissed him, thus sealing the spell, and the snowdrop’s wish was fulfilled.
