Having the shape of the letter “L”, having a surface of approximately 12 h, with a depth of 10 m and a game of colors that will certainly fascinate you, Red Lake is a natural dam lake, relatively new, considering that was formed in 1837.
Formed after heavy rains that led to a strong landslide that blocked the course of Bicăjel stream with rocky debris from the northern slope of Stânca Ucigașului, Red Lake mirrors the mountain Suhard. The name of the river comes from its color, which is given by the red tertiary sandstone, easily degradable, transported by the Red Stream.
As Romania is the land of legends, a legend has been issued about the genesis of the Red Lake which, when you hear it, will surely comfort your soul and make you look at the slightly bleeding but peaceful water of the lake with different eyes.
It is said that a very beautiful maiden named Estera falls in love with a handsome and strong boy who would have been able to fight even with a bear. Between the two, a great and beautiful love is born, just like in a fairytale. The two lovers decided to get married, but the wedding was postponed because the boy was taken into the army. Every evening young Esther went to the spring that rustled near her village and prayed with hot tears that her lover would return home safely.
One evening, however, the girl is kidnapped by a robber and taken to the mountains. Even though she was offered gold, silver and other riches, she refuses to marry him, remaining devoted to her lover. The thief decides to marry her even without her will. Then Esther begged the mountains to help her. A big storm starts suddenly and the mountain under which the two were hiding collapses, having the two under its ruins. In that place appears the Red Lake, which has its color and name from the blood of the beautiful girl.
On the way to the Red Lake, Cheile Bicazului offers you a view that will surely take your breath away. It is said that only here, if you pay attention, you can hear the mountain speaking to you.
