Personalities born in Brasov III
Here we are at our third articles about famous people who were born in Brasov and the list is not complete yet. In this third part we bring to your attention two personalities from different areas of interest: arts and sports.
The famous multi-talented artist was born in 1899 in Brasov and his pseudonym Brassai means Brasov in Hungarian. His areas of interest included photography, paintings, sculptures, film. He studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Budapest, and the Academy of Fine Arts in Berlin – Charlottenburg.
In 1924 he settled in Paris as a journalist, where he became close friends with French poet Jacques Prevert and American writer Henry Miller.
There he began to photograph the city where he lived in and managed to publish his first album „Paris de Nuit” (Paris at night). His photo related efforts were crowned with success, causing Henry Miller to name him „the eye of Paris”. In 1978 he won the first „National Photography Prize” in Paris. Besides he photographed many great artists who were his friends.
Among them we mention Henri Matisse, Simone de Beauvoir, Salvador Dali, Pablo Picasso and so on).
He wrote 17 books, numerous articles and a novel whose introduction was written by Henry Miller. In 1956 he won the „Most Original Film” award at the Cannes Film Festival with „Tante qu’il y aura des betes”. In 1974 he was made “Knight of Order of Arts and Letters”, and in 1976 he was awarded the Legion of Honor. He died in 1984 in France.
Hardly you can find in Romania someone who has not heard of the man born in Brasov in 1939, Romanian former professional tennis player, former hockey player and now a powerful businessman in Germany and Romania.
As a hockey player was part of the Romanian national team, which participated in the Winter Olympics and World Championships Innsbrukck. But shortly after that he changed its field of interest to tennis, earning fame here.
In 1970 he won with Ilie Nastase tennis tournament at Roland Garros, and numerous other international tennis tournaments with Ilie Nastase, Guillermo Villas and Adriano Panatta.
These include Tennis World Championships in Sao Paolo in 1974 and his reaching in the Davis Cup finals several times in the 1970s.
In 1997 he received the title of honorary citizen of the city Brasov as evidence of appreciation and gratitude for his support of the community in terms of economic, financial, business and charity.
