Highlights about Eurovision

This famous contest that keeps us on the edge of the seat these days was based on the Italian Sanremo Music Festival and its initial purpose to test the limits of live television broadcast technology.

The contest was named by the British journalist George Campey, first time being mentioned by this name in 1951 in the „London Evening Standard” magazine.

The first edition of Eurovision took place in Switzerland at Lugano, on the 24th of May, 1956. Seven countries participated: Belgium, France, Germany, Italy, Luxembourg, Holland and Switzerland, each competing with 2 songs. The winner was Switzerland with „Refrain” played by Lys Assia.

width=The end of the Cold War in the 1990s led to a sudden increase in numbers, with many former Eastern Bloc countries competing for the first time. Liechtenstein and Vatican City are the only European countries not to have participated; the most recent major European country to take part was the Czech Republic which made its debut in the 2007 contest.

Several famous singers or bands went to Eurovision trying to win the competition. Some of them succeeded and some didn’t.

For example, in 1974, ABBA won the contest with “Waterloo”, in 1970 Julio Iglesias reached 4th place with the song „Gwendolyne”.

In 1988 Celine Dion won the competition with „Ne partez pas sans moi” and in 2009 Patricia Kaas was placed on the 8th place with the song „Et s’il fallait le faire”.

As for Romania, the first participation to Eurovision was in 1993. Dida Dragan tried her best with the song „Nu pleca” (Don’t go!), Then, we had several singers who tried to won the contest.

Next one to compete was Dan Bittman (1994) with „Dincolo de nori” 21st place, followed by:

  • Monica Anghel with Sincron (1996) – 29th place,
  • Malina Olinescu (1998) with “Eu cred”,
  • Taxi (2000) – 17th place,
  • Monica Anghel and Marcel Pavel (2002) – 9th place,
  • Nicoleta Alexandru (2003) – 10th place,
  • Sanda Ladosi (2004) – 18th place,
  • Luminita Anghel and Sistem (2005) – 3rd place,
  • Mihai Traistariu (2006) – 4th place
  • Todomondo (2007) – 13th place

The best places obtained in the contest by the Romanian singers were Mihai Traistariu – 4th place and Luminita Anghel and Sistem – 3rd place.

This year, Mandinga is trying to win the first place at Eurovision. This band is considered to be among the favourites in the finals. Mandinga’s expectations are to be placed in the first 5 places and that their song „Zaleilah” to be the song of this Eurovision edition.

„Zaleilah” already is a hit in Romania, being the 3rd in Top 100, but the band wants their song to become the hit of this year’s contest. The composer of this song is the well-known Costi Ionita.
